Jesus is the Word of God
Why is Jesus referred to as the Word? A “word” is a communication of intellect, it is the audible expression of an inaudible thought. We, as humans, could never know the heart and mind of God, until He sent His Word to live among us.
Scriptures used: John 1:1-5, 14-16; John 3:16-17, 5:24-25; Revelation 19:11-21; Hebrews 4:12-13; Timothy 3:15-4:2; II Peter 1:16-21

Jesus is the Word of God
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ” And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.”
John 1:1-5, 14-16 NKJV
Why is Jesus referred to as the Word? A “word” is a communication of intellect, it is the audible expression of an inaudible thought. We cannot know the thoughts of another person, but when they speak those thoughts, we can share and express those thoughts.
God has thoughts toward mankind, always has. In Jeremiah 29:11, the prophet Jeremiah said that God has good thoughts toward us. John says these are thoughts of grace and truth. Who could know the heart and mind of God until He sent His word - the expression of God in flesh.
There was a time between the Old and New Testaments when God stopped speaking to man - a period of about four hundred years when there were not prophets or judges. We didn’t know about God’s thoughts toward us, and then Jesus came - a great light springing up - and He communicated God’s thoughts to us.
'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.'
'“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. '
The Word of God carries great power. With three words, Jesus rose Lazarus from the dead. With one word, “Go,” Jesus cast a legion of demons into the sea. ONe day, the Word of God will end the kingdoms of earth and the reign of the enemy.
“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.” And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.”
Revelation 19:11-21 NKJV
The new Heaven and new earth will be wonderful, because of the presence of the Word. The Bible is not the Word, it is a record of it. The Word is alive, the Word is Jesus and has conquered death, hell and the grave. It cannot be destroyed, you cannot burn the Word of God - it will endure forever!
We need to have the Word in you. It can be taken from you hand, but it cannot be taken from your heart.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
Hebrews 4:12-13 NKJV
Does the Word cut you like a sword? Not out of judgment, but out of formation - it prepares us for the perfect work we are called to. You can’t escape God’s word - you can ignore it, but the judgment it brings will be there nonetheless. If we ignore the Word, it will cut us in judgment, if we embrace it, it will take our punishment for us! The Word is a two-edged sword, cutting the iniquity out of our life, but also cutting down the enemy. The Word makes each of us a fierce warrior, armed with the Sword of the Spirit. If we battle greed or lust or envy, the Word can defeat those enemies.
When the Word is in you, it embeds in the fabric of who you are. It is in you and it just comes out. Is the Word fighting for the throne of your heart? Either you sit on your throne, or God does. He will not share the throne with us.
Why is the Bible the Word of God? Because Jesus IS the Word and the Bible is about Jesus. Every single part of the Bible points to Jesus, Old and New Testaments.
“and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”II Timothy 3:15-4:2 NKJV
“For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
II Peter 1:16-21 NKJV
We all want to receive a Word from God - something individualized and delivered just for our benefit in a moment of need. But you can’t seek a Word from God and ignore the Word of God! We have been given the Word of God and we need to give it attention… you don’t need a special word for your moment of decision, we just need to look to the Word of God - Jesus - for our answer. We don’t need any other answer. It’s lazy to seek a special Word from God - He’s given us every answer already! The more you know God and the Word and Jesus Christ, the more those problems that send you seeking answers seem to just be handled already. If you can feel like you can just put your trust in Jesus, He can still cast out the demons!
