Compassion

On Time Ministry, a local program devoted to rescuing women from human trafficking, presented this Sunday. Victoria gave her personal testimony about being rescued and the new life she has in Christ.

And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

- Matthew 9:35-38

Anyone can make a contribution, but a contribution is not necessarily coming from a place of compassion. If we give without a willing heart, our gift misses the mark. If we are going to be compassionate, we must recognize a few things:

Compassion must be given with no strings attached.

When you show compassion, you must be willing to be taken advantage of.

Compassion is not a one-time event, it is a culture. It is a life of servitude.

It is compassion, not services that make a church effective. If our church suddenly closed, we would miss it... but would our community miss it?
